About Varlaam lake

Varlaam is a complex of two lakes formed on a gravel pit dug in the 1990s. Both lakes are nutrient rich and have a large number of big carp. They also feature stunning scenery and excellent fishing facilities. Carp of over 30kg have been recorded on both lakes in recent years, and carp weighing 20-25kg are caught frequently. Varlaam is a beautiful and safe environment – the perfect getaway and a great place to fish for some stunning carp with your friends and family.

The two lakes are called Sector A (7 hectares) and Sector B (25 hectares). They are separated by an access road, but they communicate with each other. The water levels are the same. The lake bottom has plenty of hard paches with sand or gravel, but also large areas of silt. The maximum depths are about 4m. Both lakes have extensive shallow areas, depth variations and numerous structures, including no less than five islands on Sector B. There are no crayfish or poisson chat.

The entire venue is picturesque, tree-lined and looks like a park. The fishing facilities are comfortable. Both lakes are fully secure and are run by experienced carp anglers. They are not runs waters. The level of difficulty is classed as moderate but, if you fish well and the conditions are right, you can have a great session catching many big carp, perhaps even a new personal best.

lake details

Sector A is a small lake (7ha) with depths up to 4m. All swims are located on one bank, a tree-lined peninsula which streches out in the middle of the lake. The swims have been positioned so that everyone can fish from one bank. All swims are fairly close to each other, which is nice if you want to socialise with other anglers. The carp park, showers and toilets are sited just 200m away. All swims on Sector A have electricity.

The swims are numbered from A1 to A11. Please check out the lake map for details. Each swim covers a different area of the lake and commands a lot of water. We only allow for a maximum of 7 swims to be fished at the same time so the lake is never too crowded.

Thanks to the beatiful scenery and the big carp, Sector A is an ideal venue for teams looking to fish together, or tackle and bait companies looking to film promotional videos.

Sector B (25ha) is a somewhat rectangular lake with lots of attractive features including five islands. The swims are dotted around all banks. They are well spaced and the fishing directions are parallel. Most swims are larger compared to the swims on Sector A. Some are quite isolated, it's like having your private strech of water with little or no contact with the neighbours. This is ideal for anglers looking to have as much peace and quiet as possible during their sessions.

The swims are numbered from B1 to B16. Please check out the lake map for details. Swims B8, B9, B10, B11, B13, B14, B15 have comfortable cabins that can accommodate two people. These swims can only be booked with their respective cabins. All swims on Sector B have electricity.

Our lakes have hundreds of carp stocked at different times over the last 20 years. We have always kept the stocks fairly low in order to let the fish have as much natural food as possible. The initial stock was introduced in the lakes in 2005, and then we topped up with more carp in 2014, 2019 and 2020. Most carp were introduced at low weights (3-5kg), and the growth rate has been very good seeing as the lakes are young nutrient rich gravel pits.

Currently, most carp weigh over 14-15kg, and there are numerous carp over 20kg. Both lakes have seen carp over 30kg in recent years. Check out our photo gallery to see an impressive number of trophy shots and the lake records.

Nuisance species include crucian carp and the occasional chub on Sector A, while on Sector B you might catch the odd crucian carp or bream. There are no crayfish or poisson chat.
